The Royal Barge Procession, a spectacle steeped in Thai history, traces its roots back to the Sukhothai Era. The procession will embark from Tha Wasukri to Wat Arun. A contingent of 2,200 personnel, meticulously selected from various naval units, will serve as oarsmen, navigating the 52 majestic royal ceremonial barges. Notably, during the extensive six-decade reign of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the procession only transpired on sixteen occasions, highlighting its rare and esteemed nature.

The selection and training process for Royal Barge Procession oarsmen is demonstrably rigorous. Over a demanding seven-month period, potential participants undergo a meticulously designed training program to cultivate the necessary level of precision and synchronized movement. This program commences on land, where individual and team proficiency are meticulously honed. Subsequently, the training progresses to the river, incorporating no less than eight practice runs and two crucial dress rehearsals to guarantee flawless execution.

In 2011, the Thai government planned to organize the 17th Royal Barge Procession to celebrate His Majesty the King's 84th birthday (RAMA IX). However, due to severe flooding that began in July of that year, the ceremony had to be postponed indefinitely. Following the flood, the Royal Barge Procession was rescheduled and took place on November 9th, 2012. The Royal Barge Procession remains a significant cultural event in Thailand, showcasing the dedication, rich heritage, and exquisite craftsmanship associated with this longstanding tradition.

กระบวนการคัดเลือกและฝึกซ้อมสำหรับฝีพายในพระราชพิธีกระบวนพยุหยาตราชลมารคนั้นนับว่าเข้มงวดอย่างมาก ผู้เข้าร่วมฝึกอบรมต้องผ่านการฝึกฝนตามหลักสูตรที่ออกแบบมาอย่างพิถีพิถัน เป็นระยะเวลา 7 เดือน เพื่อพัฒนาระดับความแม่นยำและการเคลื่อนไหวที่สอดคล้องกัน บทฝึกเริ่มต้นบนบก โดยเน้นการพัฒนาทักษะทั้งแบบเดี่ยวและแบบกลุ่ม จากนั้นการฝึกจะย้ายไปที่แม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาซึ่งประกอบด้วยการซ้อมพายจริงไม่น้อยกว่า 8 ครั้ง และการซ้อมใหญ่ 2 ครั้ง เพื่อให้การเคลื่อนขบวนเป็นไปอย่างสมบูรณ์แบบ

ในปี พ.ศ. 2554 รัฐบาลไทยได้วางแผนจัดพระราชพิธีกระบวนพยุหยาตราชลมารค ครั้งที่ 17 เพื่อเฉลิมฉลองวันคล้ายวันประสูติปีที่ 84 พระบาทสมเด็จพระบรมชนกาธิเบศวร มหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดชมหาราช บรมนาถบพิตร แต่เนื่องจากสถานการณ์น้ำท่วมรุนแรงที่เกิดขึ้นตั้งแต่เดือนกรกฎาคมของปีนั้น ทำให้จำเป็นต้องเลื่อนพิธีออกไปอย่างไม่มีกำหนด หลังเหตุการณ์น้ำท่วมสิ้นสุดลง พระราชพิธีกระบวนพยุหยาตราชลมารคจึงได้กลับมาจัดอีกครั้งในวันที่ 9 พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ.2555 พระราชพิธีกระบวนพยุหยาตราชลมารค ยังคงเป็นงานสำคัญทางวัฒนธรรมของประเทศไทย แสดงให้เห็นถึงความพยายามของการฝึกฝน มรดกอันล้ำค่าและฝีมือช่างชั้นสูงที่เกี่ยวข้องกับประเพณีอันเก่าแก่สืบมา
